Milli Vanilli - Girl You Know It's True

Milli Vanilli was a pop sensation of the late 80s and early 90s. They won best new grammy of 1990. Soon though they were found to be lip syncers who did not actually sing or have anything to do with the music. Milli Vanilli was the brainchild of German producer Frank Farian. And it's his composition and production I'll be reviewing today.

I believe "Girl You Know It's True" to be an absolutely great pop song. Sure it's cheesey but it's supposed to be. And beneath that cheese it has an interesting contrast. I'll get to that in more detail in a second.

This song has beautiful melodies - The "Girl you know it's true" ... "my looove" ... "is for you" ... i mean - yeah - that's good good very good stuff. This song has excellent production tricks. Sure a lot of them are cheesey - but they work within the context of the song.

The most ridiculously cheesey thing in the song is the spoken word intro. With the womans voice on the left and the man's on the right. What the fuck is that all about? I'm not exactly sure.

Anyway back to this contrast I was talking about earlier. "Girl you know it's true" has this thing where he's saying "i'm in love with two girls" and then he's saying "girl you know it's true, i love you" --- I've always felt that was a very cool bit and the way it builds up to a crescendo as the song goes along I find to be somewhat genius. Yeah I guess you could say I'm a fan of Frank Farian.

OK - the rap sections are pretty stupid.

But at 3:24 or so... things get a bit more exciting... yes... "i'm in love .. i'm in love i'm in love with two... " and then GIRL YOU KNOW ITS TRUE.... yeah do you see what I'm talking about there? and how about that "g-g-girl" at 3:47 and again 10 seconds later? (yes you need your mp3 at home to play along. get mp3downloadhq to download mp3's like this)

You may like to think I'm being ironic in singing the praises of "girl you know it's true" (and when it comes on certainly I cannot resist singing along) but you are shit out of luck. It's a fantastic pop song and Frank Farian deserves credit as some sort of insane genius.

Love the song. But the "rapping" sections and the silly intro and the general sillyness of the mood can only let me rank it so high.
